“Soya produced on a mass scale in countries where it is not part of the food culture but is simply a commodity for export, upsets the social, cultural, ecological, political and economic balance. It destroys the human rights of peasant and indigenous communities as well as the knowledge and practice of diverse farming and food production.” – http://www.gaiafoundation.org/
The growing global demand for soy, including organic, has had devastating effects in Latin America. The ongoing tragedy in Brazil and Argentina clearly illustratesthe problem. The demand for Latin American soy has led to a massive agricultural conversion that facilitates deforestation of the Amazon, triggers soil erosion and desertification, and displaces local food production.
Export-led agricultural growth has been devastating to the Latin American people, who struggle to feed themselves as arable land is consumed by soy monocultures. The tragic result has been rapid slash and burn of the rainforest.
